Group Members Exhibitions for December

Various members of the Buckhorn Artists' Group will be exhibiting their works at the following shows during the month of December:

Poster for the Buckhorn Artists Group Show at APFTA

Today, I finished the poster for the Buckhorn Artists' Group for their exhibit at A Place For The Arts, in Bancroft, Ontario.

We will be setting up the art show on the 28th of July and the show will run from the 29th of July through to the 30th of August.

If you have a chance please come out and enjoy the exhibit.

Ron Desjardine

Ron Desjardine lives in the Peterborough area.

He is primarily a watercolour artist who enjoys interpreting rural landscape features and cityscapes with energetic brush strokes.

He frequently uses bold colour and contrast to saturate a picture with a liveliness that takes advantage of the mercurial features of watercolour.

He paints with several groups in the area and shows his work several times a year.

Emil Varga

Emil's images portray the beauty of flowers, the tranquility of evening sunsets and visions of Ontario landscapes captured in watercolour and mixed media in a semi-realistic style.

He was born in Cornwall, Ontario and he has lived in Peterborough, Ontario since the early 1940’s where he attended several public schools, followed by high school at Kenner and PCVS.

After which he was offered a drafting apprentice ship at C.G.E., later transferring into product and design engineering.

Forty two years later, when Emil retired and decided to pursue a life long interest in the arts.

He is self taught, but has taken workshops from many notable artists.

"As far as creating a piece of art is concerned, I would say that as I am working on a project (in the solitude of my workshop with my classical music playing), the mood, which is serene and peaceful, seems to be almost spiritual and when finished, I am amazed at what I have accomplished. Because I did not start my painting full time until my retirement, I recommend to all budding artists study and read as much as possible because it is never too late to start a creative journey."

2018 Peterborough Garden Show

Today we set up our exhibit at the 18th Annual Peterborough Garden Show, held at the Evinrude Centre, at 911 Monaghan Road, in Peterborough Ontario.

This year it is the Buckhorn Artists' Group exhibiting there, instead of the artists from the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio as none of the members from the Gallery were willing to organize and run the show.















We arrived at the Evinrude Centre in the morning and it didn't take very long to unload and set up the grids.

Once everything was securely in place the artists picked out where they wanted to hang their paintings. Some of the artists had larger paintings than others and used an entire set of panels, while others had smaller pieces and shared the panels.















Once we everything was hung we decided we needed to bring in some lights. The sitters for tonight's 5-9 p.m. shift brought them in together with light bars and extension cordss.

It didn't take long to hang the lights on the panels, turn them on and get them positioned to enhance the look of the paintings.
















It wasn't long before people started to arrive to look at the various displays throughout the building and come into the conference room to have something to eat and view our show.

Many of the people we spoke with came out tonight in the rain and hoped to return home before the temperature dropped and changed to freezing rain for the overnight.

















For those of us who were sitting tonight we were fortunate that the freezing rain held off until we made it safely home.

Three paintings were sold by Diane Collins and Susan Sydney.

The Last Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Today was a very busy day with fifteen paintings purchased from Diane Collins, Ron Desjardine, Heather Grant, Sharon Harper, Susan Sydney and Bonnie Windover. Pottery was sold by JoAnne Connell Northey and small items were bought from Diane Collins, Penny Little and JoAnne Connell Northey.

27th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

It was a fairly busy day with six paintings sold by Diane Collins, Ron Desjardine, Sharon Harper and Bonnie Windover; pottery by JoAnne Connell Northey and small items purchased from Diane Collins, Irene Smith and JoAnne Connell Northey.

Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Today, we had a larger attendance than yesterday and eight paintings were purchased from Rebecca Bilcox, Ron Desjardine, Heather Grant and Susan Sydney as well as small items from Diane Collins and pottery from JoAnne Connell Northey.

Setting up the 27th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show

Today we set up the 27th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show at St. Matthew's Church in Buckhorn, Ontario.

While we were waiting for the main grids to arrive, we set up all the tables along the window wall, the ones at the front, the large table at the back of the room and the one in front of the bookcases.

Each table was then covered with long white tablecloths, followed with smaller green tablecloths to create a pleasing contrast from the stark white.

Next we brought in the short grids that I store for the front display tables.



















Now that the main grids had arrived they were set up down the centre of the hall in a zig zag pattern that was carefully measured so each panel grouping was the same distance.

Then the narrower panels were set to each side of the main panels to provide stability so they wold not fall down if they were bumped into by someone not paying attention.

Once the grid set up was completed and each artist's name was put in their space we were allowed to bring in our paintings and start hanging our work in our space.



















Each artist had to be sure that their panels filled and all of their exhibits where completed tonight as the show opens tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.

Then each artist had to make sure the list of their paintings was at the front table for the people who would look after sales in the morning.

Last Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Today is the half day of our show and it was also the busiest with a steady stream of people going through to view the exhibition.























Ten paintings were purchased from Heather Grant, Catherine Selinger, Ron Desjardine, Diane Collins Penny Little and Helen Sheppard. Small items were sold by Penny Little, Diane Collins and JoAnne Connell Northey, who also sold pottery.

Shades of Summer Art Show

It was an interesting day at the art show, with a refreshing breeze blowing and the lack of humidity in the morning due to a much needed downpour of rain around 5:00a.m. this morning.

The skies however, remained overcast and as the morning progressed the wind increased along with the temperature 80F (26.7C) and the humidity 100F (37.8C) and then the rain came again in waves, of extremely heavy down pours and high winds, then eased slightly before another rainstorm came in, including two thunderstorms during the afternoon.

There were tornado warnings, severe rainfall warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for the area. The power went out twice at the show, but no one complained about being in the dark for a short time and continued to enjoy the art work when the lights came back on.

Eight paintings were sold by Catherine Selinger, Susan Sydney, Bonnie Windover and Penny Little. Diane Collins, JoAnne Connell Northey and Penny Little sold small items.

26th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

It was a fairly quiet day today with the temperature was once again hot 94F (34.4C) and the humidity making it feel like 107F (41.7C) and even though it did cloud over in the afternoon there was still no rain; hopefully tomorrow will bring some of the rain we so badly need.

















One painting sold today by Susan Sydney and small items were sold by Diane Collins and Penny Little.

First Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Once again the temperature reached 95F (35C) and the humidity was even higher making it feel like 107F (41.7C).

















Although not many people came out to see the show today, fourteen paintings were sold from Ron Desjardine, Pat Harvey-McCourt, Rebecca Bilcox, Susan Sydney, JoAnne Connell Northey, Dianne Collins, Catherine Selinger and Heather Grant. Small items were sold by Dianne Collins and pottery by JoAnne Connell Northey.

Setting up the 26th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show

Tonight once we set up the grids and got the tables ready we could then bring in our artwork and hang the paintings for the show.

With it being only four days instead of its usual nine days we needed the displays to be ready for the public to view first thing in the morning with an earlier starting time than in previous years.

Also with three of our members deciding not to exhibit at this show there was a lot more space available for paintings for the remaining eleven artists.

While there are many changes with this show, some of them are for the better.















One of which is having the panels run in a solid row down the centre of the church hall instead of it having a narrow open space in the grids, dividing them into two sections halfway down the row.

This always seemed to cause a bottle neck when large numbers of the public came in to view the exhibit.

It will be interesting to see how the hot and humid temperatures will affect the attendance at the show, as over the years attendance is usually lower.

Especially with today being 95F (35C) and the humidity making it feel like 105F (40.6C) and the next couple of days are to be even more hot and humid.

But since you cannot change the weather tomorrow is another day and we will take it as it comes.

Shortened Dates for the Shades of Summer Show

Most of the members of the Buckhorn Artists' Group have decided that they will shorten the dates for the summer show from 06-14 August 2016 to 11-14 August 2016.

They cancelled the May show last year after 25 years of having that show because a number of the members felt that it was too much work to set up an exhibit for a three day show and it was decided that they will not hold that show again this year.

Now the same members have deemed that it is too much work to hold the summer show for nine days and will shorten the dates to a four day.

It should be an interesting to see the results.

Last Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show

Today is the second half day for our show as well as the last day. The sunshine and pleasant temperatures are making it and enjoyable day.

It is a wonderful change not having the humid weather with a lovely sunny day at 76F (24.4C) and a cooling breeze.


















Today they are holding Rock the Locks right across the street from the Church which is attracting a large crowd, with many people coming through to see our art show as well.

25th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Today is supposed to be the last day of hot 76F (24.4C) and humid 93F (33.9C) weather for a while and it rained on and off all day.

The continuing hot weather 85F (29.4C) seems to keep people away from the show and stay in the coolness of their homes, but fortunately there was a nice breeze blowing which kept things from becoming even more humid 100F (37.8C).
