Buckhorn Artists' Group - A Brief History
The Buckhorn Tuesday Painters was formed in 1987, when several like-minded artists decided to meet together and paint in St. Matthew's Church Hall in Buckhorn, Ontario. Since then the group has evolved and expanded from the original ten members and beginning in 1989 some of the members formed the Buckhorn Artists’ Group and have offered their art to the public at their annual shows.
The Group held its first show and sale on Victoria Day Weekend in 1989. After another successful show the following year they decided to hold a Thanksgiving show and sale as well. They continued to run two shows a year until 1990 when the Group members decided to hold a summer show in August for the first time.
Enchantment an original collage by S. Sydney.
All shows are held in the St. Matthew's Church Hall in beautiful downtown Buckhorn, where visitors can view the works of twelve to fifteen different artists. If you have a chance to be in Buckhorn this year, it would be a great opportunity to drop into one of the 2011 shows.
The Victoria Day Weekend show, called "Among Friends", is held in May, the "Shades of Summer" Show and Sale will be held this year from 06-14 August 2011.
Here's a glimpse at the members of the Buckhorn Artists' Group and what their specialties are...
- Susan Sydney: has been exhibiting her work since 1982 and works in all media except oils and egg tempera. She enjoys doing animal portraits, wildlife, still life, floral, landscapes and mechanical. Recently she has started experimenting with abstracts and collages.
Winter Whimsy an original watercolour painting.
- Irene Smith: began painting in 1985. She paints landscapes, animals and floral in oil and watercolour. She also does architectural renderings in pen and ink or in pencil.
Pink Serenade an original oil painting.
- Helen Sheppard: is well known for her oil and watercolour paintings of Stoney Lake where she resides. Although most her work is of landscapes and flowers, she is often commissioned for paintings of St. Peter's on the Rock, a church on an island in Stoney Lake.
The Turtle Pond an original oil painting.
- Heather Grant: paints in oils, watercolour, pen and ink, pastels, graphite pencils and charcoal, she also carves in wood and does traditional rug hooking. Heather likes to do landscapes which often feature wildlife and buildings in her work, as well as still life and floral paintings.
Old Barn an original oil painting.
- Barbara McGregor: paints in oils and acrylics, but her favourite medium is watercolour. Scenes using water as a focal point are her favourite way of expressing her love of the Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton areas.
Forgotten Barns an original watercolour painting.
- Bonny Windover: paints mainly in watercolour and sometimes adds pen and ink details to her paintings. Her delicate paintings are usually of still life, landscapes and floral.
Forgotten Days an original watercolour painting.
- Penny Little: does most of her oils, watercolours and sketches from her home on Gilchrist Bay where she offers for sale greeting cards, paintings and sketches. She accepts commission work of cottages and local scenes.
Painted Turtle an original acrylic painting.
- JoAnne Connell Northey: has enjoyed painting in watercolour for a number of years. Each painting is an original, done from sketches on location or from photographs she has taken. She has her own art studio and pottery studio and each piece of pottery is hand done on the wheel, and unique.
Farm Sunset an original acrylic painting.
- Tom Young: started with Japanese brush calligraphy and painting which he pursued until he discovered watercolour in 1988. He has developed his own style, mainly consisting of bright colours and transparency. Tom is always ready for a fresh approach to any subject, from traditional to surrealism.
Crucifixion an original watercolour painting.
- Diane Collins: she began at an early age entering high school art competitions and won awards. Once she retired in 1998 she returned to painting for pleasure and relaxation with each piece being a "new adventure".
The Rose Door an original watercolour painting.
- Lorraine Ryan: started with folk art and learned about colour and how to use your brushes. From there she progressed to watercolour, pen and ink, acrylic, mixed media, and photography; all of which she thoroughly enjoys.
Petunias an original watercolour painting.
- Rebecca Bilcox: is the newest addition to the Group; she chooses to paint a wide variety of subject matter in watercolour. Many of her paintings are rich and vibrant, full of strong contrasts which show her easily recognized style.

Rebecca Bilcox
Rebecca Bilcox chooses to paint images of things that evoke emotion, that are near and familiar. She paints a broad spectrum of subject matter, particularly of nature and its landscape from places across Ontario, Algonquin Provincial Park and our eastern Provinces.
A self taught artist, with an intuitive style, she paints her watercolours with a fine detail, expressive style and rich tones. Her paintings reflect an intensity, passion and characterization of the subject matter.
Classes and workshops with several professionals in the beginning helped me to refine her technical skills, which allowed her, as an individual, to develop her unique and now recognizable style. She continues to participate in private showings, art shows and juried shows throughout the year.
She holds active membership in the ECOAA, Oshawa Art Association and the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington.
Through the years she has organized, planned and provided support to may art festivals and showings.
Her paintings can be found in many private and public collections across Canada, United States and Japan.
The Friends of Algonquin Park in 2008 selected a painting she had donated of Autumn Leaves to be displayed on note cards, note pads and coffee mugs.

Barbara McGregor
Barbara McGregor's first attempt at painting was with the Willowdale Group of Artists. She dabbled in oils and acrylics, but it wasn't until she moved to the Kawarthas that she was introduced to watercolour as a medium.
It was love at first sight. She loves the way the colours blend on the paper and happy accidents occur.
Barbara has been developing her skill by taking many workshops with such renowned artists as Gordon MacKenzie, Al Poolman, Edwin Matthews, Brenda Milner. Her love of the Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton is reflected in her paintings. Scenes using water as a focal point are a particular favourite way of expressing her desire to create peace and harmony in her surroundings.
Her pictures are in private collections in Canada, U.S.A. and Europe.

Last Day of Among Friends Show
Today is the final day of the Art Show at St. Matthew's Church in Buckhorn and it was once again warm and sunny although the storm clouds did roll in later in the day bringing rain and a thunderstorm.
Attendance was down considerably from previous years, but three paintings were sold from Heather Grant and Bonnie Windover as well as smaller items from Irene Smith, JoAnne Connell Northey and Bonnie Windover.
Looking forward to our Shades of Summer Show which will be held 06-14 August 2011.

Among Friends Art Show
Today is the half day at the Among Friends Art Show and Sale.
Many of the people who attended church this morning stayed to view our artwork.
This year with the price of fuel there seems to be a lot less boat traffic going through the locks than on previous years, but we still had almost the same attendance as we had yesterday.
Seven paintings have sold from Heather Grant, Rebecca Bilcox and Bonny Windover and some smaller items from Diane Collins and Bonny Windover.
I hope you will be able to come out and visit the show either today or before it closes tomorrow.
The hours for our show are:
22 May 10 - 12:00pm - 5:00pm
23 May 10 - 10:00am - 5:00pm

23rd Annual Among Friends Art Show and Sale
With this being the first nice day without rain there were lower numbers than on previous years but we still had a good crowd come out to visit our show.
Today was the opening of our show and we were greeted with a warm and sunny day instead of the rain and thunderstorms the weatherman had been forecasting.
One of the photographers from Lakefield Herald came in to cover our show and took photographs of the art exhibited and some of the members of the Group.
So far three original paintings have sold from Irene Smith, Helen Sheppard and Jo-Anne Connell Northey, as well as a number of smaller items from Bonny Windover and Diane Collins.
The hours for our show are:
21 May 10 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
22 May 10 - 12:00pm - 5:00pm
23 May 10 - 10:00am - 5:00pm

Among Friends Art Show and Sale
Today we are getting the show set up for the 23rd Annual Among Friends Art Show and Sale to be held at St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Buckhorn, Ontario.
The Church is going to hold their plant and bake sale tomorrow as they did last year. Most of us will be either getting plants or baked goods, and in some cases both.
We hope you will be able to come out and enjoy our art at some point over the Victoria Day weekend.

Painting for pleasure and relaxation with each piece being a "new adventure". Her work has sold to Art enthusiasts across Canada.

Thomas W. Young
"TOM" to his friends has spent the whole of his career as an Integration and Test Manager on the Canadarm 1 and Canadarm 2 for the Space Shuttle and the Space Station respectively, earning two Silver Snoopies and the NASA Public Service Medal in the process.
His main hobby in the early early years was Bonsai, the art of miniature trees, of which he had a large collection. There was a natural link to Japanese Brush Calligraphy and Painting which he pursued until he discovered Watercolour in 1988.
Tom's natural ability for engineering drawing was helpful initially and after two years he began to master the use of water, a difficult task. Since then after many lesson and workshops he has developed his own style, mainly consisting of bright colours and transparency. Never afraid of a challenge he is always ready for a fresh approach to any subject, from traditional to surrealism. Tom's work is present in many private collections.
